Yoga for Neck, Shoulders and Jaw Pain

Neck and shoulder pain are not only caused by stress, but also postural changes occur with the constant use of technology,and can cause a head forward syndrome, commonly called "text neck:. In addition sititng in our computer slumped position, we effectively cut off the abdominals from the diaphragm, and as a result, the diaphragm is no longer working efficiently. With this change in posture, the accessory muscles of the chest become primary breathers. As a result, people breathe up instead of out. For the approximately twenty to thirty thousand times a day we breathe, the musculature in the neck and shoulders is contracting. This creates chronic tension all the way up through the shoulders and neck, the jaw, as well as headaches, tension in the head, TMD, joint pain and tension around the eyes.”

While the pain may be localized in the neck and shoulders, the problem is more often than not emanating from elsewhere, such as a misalignment in the ribcage, poor abdominal and mid-back core support, or a dysfunctional breathing pattern. TMD and TMJ also play a big part in neck and shoulder pain.

To be effective, therefore, long-term solutions need to include functional movement, functional breath, and balanced action throughout the jaw, neck, and shoulder girdle.

Starr has had personal experience with two major spinal surgeries for severe neck and shoulder pain, with a complicated diagnosis of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Yoga therapy has played a big role in re-learning functional movement, functional breathing, and specific treatment and yoga for TMJ and TMD.

This workshop will include education regarding postural assessments and how to identify anterior head carriage, assess breathing patterns and functional movement. It will also include a therapeutic yoga practice to relieve tension in the neck, shoulder and jaw, as well as promoting functional breathing and movement patterns.
